When our spouses serve overseas, maintaining a strong and trusting marriage becomes paramount. Remembering what God says about love in 1 Corinthians 13 will help you get through this time of separation. The distance and time apart can present unique challenges, but with open communication, faith, and dedication, we can foster trust and keep our love thriving. Check out 6 steps to maintaining trust while separated.
1. Open and Honest Communication:
Communication is the lifeline of any successful marriage, especially when separated by distance. Without open communication, all it takes is one sentence from a friend, one photo, or one name drop to instill a drop of doubt. In our modern technological world, there is not much reason why you shouldn't be able to stay connected through regular video calls, emails, or letters. Create a safe space where both partners can openly share their feelings, joys, and struggles. One partner may have a harder time physically separated while the other partner may find it harder to not be able to communicate as much as they are used to. Remember, honest communication builds trust and reassures each other of your commitment.
2. Leverage Faith to Overcome Challenges:
As Christians, we find solace in our faith, knowing that God is with us even in the most challenging times. Set a time to pray together, seek His guidance, and lean on His strength to navigate the difficulties of separation. You may be on opposite sides of the world, but you can still set a time every day to stop and pray. Allow your faith to fortify the trust in your marriage, knowing that God's plan is greater than any distance that may separate you.
3. Cultivate Shared Interests and Goals:
Even when miles apart, find ways to cultivate shared interests and goals. Read the same books, watch movies together, or set joint goals for the future. A book me and my husband read together was this one by John C. Lennox called Determined to Believe.
Sharing common experiences and aspirations creates a sense of togetherness and deepens your emotional connection.
4. Surprise Each Other with Acts of Love:
Small gestures of love can bridge the gap and remind your spouse of your unwavering commitment. Send surprise care packages, heartfelt letters, or thoughtful gifts to let them know they are cherished and missed. During my husband's time in Korea, I was able to organize a breakfast delivery to my husband for his birthday. Believe me, if you really want to do something, you will find a way! These acts of love not only express your affection but also affirm your trust in the strength of your marriage.

5. Seek Support from Your Community:
Lean on your support system during this time of separation. Engage with your church community, family, and friends who can offer understanding, encouragement, and prayers. Thankfully, we moved in with my parents during this time in our lives and I can't even put into words how much of a help they were. Sharing your journey with others who care can alleviate the emotional burden and strengthen your resilience.
6. Develop Independence and Self-Growth:
Use the time apart to focus on personal growth and independence. Pursue hobbies, develop skills, and explore new interests. Take the time to remind yourself of your VERY important role in your marriage. If you haven't read it yet, check out my post about the strength of women in their marriages! I dove deep into exercise and reading these books.
Investing in your individual well-being not only benefits you but also enhances your relationship when reunited.
Conclusion:
Maintaining trust in your marriage while your spouse is overseas requires intention, patience, and unwavering faith. By embracing open communication, leveraging your Christian values, and staying connected through shared interests and acts of love, you can nurture the bond that distance cannot break. Embrace the challenges as opportunities for growth and rely on God's guidance as you navigate this journey of love and trust.
