3 Important Steps for Raising Strong And Independent Girls

In a world that's constantly evolving, equipping our daughters with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges on their own and emerge as resilient individuals is more important than ever.

As a mother of 3 daughters, raising strong and independent daughters is one of my main tasks in life and something that occupies my thoughts from time to time, does it mean that it's completely different than raising boys? Maybe, but I wouldn't know with 3 wonderful girls at home. But let's start with the basics.

Children undeniably absorb the most vital lessons from us adults. Copying our behavior, dietary habits, interpersonal interactions, responses to challenges, and effective communication, simply everything.

Kids observe and listen, often when we least expect it (we sometimes jokingly refer to our eldest daughter as “the little spy” because she seems to hear everything), this fundamental education will guide their decision-making on their journey through life.

So modeling healthy choices will pave the way for your children to make their own informed and health-conscious decisions as they mature and go out into the world independently.

1. Embracing Self-Esteem and Self-Confidence

One of the fundamental building blocks of raising strong and independent girls is fostering a positive self-image. Help them understand their self-worth and embrace who they are. Let them know that it's okay to be unique and that their individuality is something to be celebrated.

In a glossed-over world full of unrealistic images confidence and a positive self-image is invaluable.

Set a Self-Love Example

Kids are incredible. They love us unconditionally and in their eyes, we are perfect (even if we don’t feel that way). So resist the temptation to express constant self-criticism in your children's presence, not only because you are bringing down their hero, but also because they will start to copy you.

Instead of uttering phrases like “I need to lose weight”, replace them with positive self-affirmations like “I love my eyes/smile” or “I'm proud of all the things I got done today.”

This will demonstrate a healthy self-image to your child and has also been demonstrated to enhance your emotional well-being. So a win-win in my opinion. If it is hard in the beginning, write a list of 5 things you like about yourself on a sticky note and place it on your dresser or mirror.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Instilling a growth mindset is like planting the seeds of resilience and determination. It's about teaching our girls that failure is not the end of the road but merely a detour on the path to success.

Encourage them to embrace challenges and setbacks as opportunities for growth. By doing so, we're shaping their mindset to view obstacles as stepping stones to a brighter future.

Empower Her to Advocate for Her Beliefs

More than anything, instill in your daughter the importance of advocating for her convictions. If she ever finds herself in a situation that feels uneasy or unsettling, teach her to take immediate action. Emphasize that her instincts are her most reliable compass.

A significant aspect of maturing is gaining the strength to stand up for one's beliefs. Encourage your daughter to express her thoughts openly, have faith in her instincts, and demand respect. This will not only help her grow as an individual but also foster her self-assuredness and independence.

Emphasize Non-Physical Praise

While there's nothing wrong with complimenting your daughter's physical appearance, it's important to recognize that external beauty isn't the only or most important aspect of her identity.

Direct your attention towards her internal qualities. Instead of merely saying, “You look pretty today,” consider offering compliments that reflect her character, like:

  • Your presence brings joy into my life.
  • Your sense of humor never always makes me smile.
  • I feel fortunate to have such a kind-hearted daughter.

Acknowledging the depth and substance of her personality can go a long way to make her feel seen and boost her feeling of self-worth.

2. Nurturing Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is like a secret superpower that can elevate our girls' lives. It encompasses essential qualities such as empathy, self-awareness, and strong social skills. When we nurture these qualities in our daughters, we equip them to navigate complex social situations and understand and handle their emotions better.

Encouraging Open Communication

Open and honest communication is the cornerstone of developing emotional intelligence. Create a safe and supportive environment where your girls can express their feelings without judgment.

Engaging in open conversations about emotions and their impact allows them to gain insight into their emotional landscape and those of others.

Handling Conflicts and Setbacks

Life is full of conflicts and disappointments, and developing emotional intelligence helps our girls handle them with grace. Conflict resolution skills are invaluable in maintaining healthy relationships. By helping to look at conflicts from different points of view and coping with disappointments and setbacks without lashing out at others, you can assist them in building some impressive skills that will serve them throughout life.

The Significance of Family

Creating unique family traditions and sharing meaningful moments in an atmosphere of love, support, and encouragement will leave a lasting impact on your child, surpassing the influence of any individual or group they encounter in their lifetime.

Fostering healthy parent-child and sibling connections, promoting open and honest communication, and embracing one another during challenging moments ensures that your daughter will naturally turn to their parents and siblings as their first source of support when in need.

Showing Consideration and Gratitude

Simply being aware of others, and offering assistance is something that will be noticed positively and makes life so much easier in the long run. We mothers understand better than anyone how a helping hand at the right moment can mean the world.

Also, simple gestures like bringing something, anything, if invited over for dinner at someone’s house, is something that conveys your appreciation and respect. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but the gesture will be noted positively. And let’s be honest most often it’s not the husband who thinks of such things.

3. Encouraging Independence

Empowering our young girls involves encouraging their ability to make choices and face the consequences. It's not about making every decision for them but rather providing guidance and allowing them the space to explore their options. This process of decision-making helps them develop a sense of autonomy and responsibility.

Setting Goals and Aspirations

Encourage them to dream big and set goals for themselves. Whether it's academic achievements, personal passions, or career aspirations, having a clear vision of what they want to achieve motivates them to take the necessary steps toward independence.

Teaching Essential Life Skills

Equipping our girls with practical life skills is essential for their journey towards independence. From time management, financial literacy and budgeting to basic household and first aid, these skills form the building blocks of self-reliance.

Teaching them how to manage their finances or perform essential tasks like cooking, and cleaning, but also changing the tire of a car, or using a hammer and drill empowers them to navigate life's challenges with confidence.

Defying Gender Biases

Depending on where you are raising strong and independent girls, gender biases can limit our daughters' potential and self-perception. Encourage them to question societal norms and expectations, highlighting that their worth and abilities aren't defined by their gender or restrictive stereotypes. That way we empower our daughters with the knowledge and mindset to embrace their full potential.

Embracing a “Never Give Up” Attitude

The “never give up” attitude is a driving force behind success. Encourage your daughter to embrace this mindset, emphasizing that determination is the fuel that keeps their dreams alive.

It's about setting a powerful work ethic and an unyielding spirit as core values in their pursuit of independence and accomplishment.

Confronting challenges head-on and thriving in the face of adversity will help our girls bounce back from life's challenges and emerge even stronger.
